Hydrogen plays a major role in the long-term success of the energy transition. Together with other renewable energy sources, hydrogen as an energy carrier will make a major contribution to the substitution of fossil fuels, and thus hydrogen supports the reduction of CO2 emissions.
In order for renewable energy to be stored as well, some of it must be converted to hydrogen. Hydrogen can then be stored underground in large quantities as an energy carrier.
For the storage of hydrogen, several requirements are placed on the geological formations. The most important requirements relate to the technical tightness of the storage formation, which is tested several times in the course of storage production, and the access well to the chosen storage facility. This includes all elements installed in the borehole and their functions (completion).
In the last 5 years, UGS GmbH has actively followed the development of hydrogen projects on the national as well as international markets.
In cooperation with its partners, UGS GmbH is in charge of several hydrogen storage projects.
