P&A – Plug and Abandonment

When operations are done, the planning and realisation of subsurface decommissioning and, if necessary, above-ground facilities goes hand in hand. In accordance with the German BBergG, the release from mining supervision requires the implementation/execution of the final operating plan or corresponding orders from the authorities. We are available for engineering services as well as for all necessary Rigservices.

Since 1990 UGS realized more than 400 P&A jobs. We bring extensive experience in technologies, processes, and methods to ensure safe, long-term P&A solutions.

The scope of services includes

  • P&A jobs for production, injection and monitoring wells according to the applicable guidelines
  • Recompletion of old wells and P&A
  • Complete liquidation of entire locations
  • subsequent and integer abandonment of wells with possible or known behind-casing-circulations
  • Sectionmilling in casing strings
  • Milling of installation components (e. g. packers)
  • Washover of completion elements to be removed
  • Sequential cut and pull of free-hanging strings
  • Installation of mechanical plugs
  • Placing and testing cement stages

Services

Engineering

UGS handles decommissioning – from residual gas extraction, over engineering the P&A job (incl. approvals) to onsite rig operations.

Cut & Pull

Depending on the integration of a casing with regard to holding forces, it may be advisable to cut and pull it in sections. Compared with the alternative of milling entire sections, this technology proves to be comparatively time-saving. With our in-house geophysicists, we have the expertise to assess the chances of success for these operations and implement them in terms of engineering.

Milling

In some well sections, it may be necessary to create a connection to the original formation. The corresponding milling and underreaming work for this must be carefully planned and carried out by experienced personnel. We provide both services.

Installations that cannot be easily removed sometimes have to be recovered by milling. Packers can be milled with UGS workover rigs, planned and monitored by our engineers.

Washover

Completion components (e.g. filters) that have to be recovered in accordance with official or operator requirements must be exposed and pulled, this is usually done with washover operations.
