Gas storage facilities

Over the last 25 years, underground natural gas storage has become an important part of the energy infrastructure – both in Germany and abroad.

Because the geographical distribution of natural gas deposits does not align with energy-consuming countries, ensuring a continuous energy supply is particularly important for industrialised nations. For this reason, the first salt caverns and aquifer structures for the storage natural gas were built or converted in the mid-1960s in order to ensure a stable energy supply.
