Dissused Mines

Mines that are no longer used for mineral extraction can be suitable for underground storage if the surrounding rock formation is geologically tight and
existing shafts and boreholes can be safely and economically plugged. However, there are considerable technological difficulties and obstacles to be overcome before such a level of tightness can be achieved.

DetailDetail

As disused mines are mostly operated within a small pressure range, the installation of compressors is not usually necessary.

The gas can be injected if the pipeline pressure exceeds the pressure in the mine and - vice versa - the gas can be discharged when the pressure in the pipeline drops sufficiently. This method of storing natural gas without the use of compressors is called respiratory exchange technology.

Although the gas pressure range is quite small, large working gas quantities can be achieved as a result of the enormous volume of the galleries and chambers which have already been mined, and the operation of such a storage facility can be very economical.
